Re: PC: Wreck of the Penn Central book

Wreck of the Penn Central gives a good account of the events of the merger
and aftermath, but as someone has pointed out, it was written so close to the
bankruptcy the book lacks a historical perspective. Anyway, while not
specifically aimed at the rail enthusiast, a PC fan will have at least one
copy! While the authors place much of the blame on the top three executives
(with some justification), my own humble belief is that the railroad failed
because: overly restrictive government regulation, a generally "sick"
industry and perhaps most importantly, absolutely not enough thought going
into post-merger operations, particularly in areas served by the PRR and NYC,
but including administrative procedures, compatible computers, etc.
