Phil,
Thanks for trying to help. I too have gone through my videos, both PC
and NYC, as well as many books and just cannot figure out any distinct
pattern. The same type of car in any series seems to have both styles.
Also of interest, the 1000-1100 series MU cars had both black and green
roofs but I believe the reason had to do with the builder (PS and ACF).
An article several years ago about the Pennsy Senator and Congressional
cars in Passenger Train Journal states that the PC repainting scheme called
for black roofs, but I have photos of these cars both ways as well.
Still confused, but not alone,
