    Yes, using just any marker you could, in time, be reading on the front
what you wrote on the back.
There are special markers for "writing" on the back of photos.   Check with
you local (reliable) office supply, or better photo suppliers for the proper
materials. There are commercial suppliers via an 800# as well.
    And while you are at it... you might just like to treat those new photos
as if they were priceless antique photos.. get acid-free archival quality
mountings (pages, sleeves, etc.) so that you'll have them around for a
while.
    If I re-call, the average age of responders to this list is about 35+
(and spanning about 17 to 70). You might want those photos around when your
youngins' reach your age..
