In the book The History of The Pennsylvania Railroad by Timothy Jacobs, Page
34, Jacobs writes of the engineering genius of Herman Haupt, Designer of the
line...
"Thompson, (J Edgar Thompson)((President of the PRR) together with
engineering genius, Herman Haupt, had laid down the original Pennsy line,
including the spectacular horshoe curve, which starting just west of Altoona,
rose over a 1.8 percent grade, to gain 122 feet from one horn of the curve to
the other. It describes an arc doubling back over the Kittanning Valley."
