pre-PC paint during and after PC. I have always been intrigued by the
ex-NH FL9's (PC 5000-5059) having spent my childhood growing up
within a stones throw of Harmon Yards were the FL9's were serviced.
Over the past few years I have done some research into which units
were painted PC and which were not. Here is what I have found
(corrections always welcome).
The following FL9's remained in New Haven paint until 1976 with no PC
identification accept the number. (PC numbers)
5001, 5006, 5008, 5009, 5023, 5025, 5029, 5030, 5035, 5048, 5051
The following FL9's remained in New Haven paint but received the PC
5000, 5005, 5007, 5018, 5019, 5020, 5022, 5032, 5038, 5043
The following FL9's received full PC black with markings.
5003, 5010, 5011, 5013, 5014, 5015, 5024, 5026, 5027
The following FL9's probably retained their New Haven paint until they
were painted blue and yellow (during the PC era) for the MTA with a
yellow PC worm on the side.
5002, 5004, 5012, 5016, 5017, 5021, 5031, 5033, 5034, 5036, 5037,
5039, 5041, 5042, 5045, 5046, 5047, 5049, 5050, 5052
In addition, the following FL9's were repainted from PC black to MTA blue
and yellow during the PC era.
5003, 5010, 5013, 5014 (1st unit painted MTA colors), 5015, 5024, 5026,
5027. (5011 was retired and scrapped by PC before it could be
repainted from PC black to blue and yellow).
I am unaware of the paint scheme for the following units during the PC
era. (It is interesting to note that the all the following locomotives still
exist. Only one (5056) has been rebuilt to an FL9AC.)
5053, 5054, 5055, 5056, 5057, 5058, 5059
If anyone on the list knows were I can obtain an HO scale model of an
FL9 or were to find an article on how to kit bash one I would appreciate
